About

James Corbiere

James finds a special connection to creating art on Mother Nature's wood and loves bringing the spirit that presents itself into the light for all to see. He relates the images and gives stories to the pieces as the links are made to the oral history stories of his culture. In a way, he gives a new voice to an old past. He works with bright bold colours, which are those he saw in people as a child. James believes that colour speaks volumes in emotional expression and so he uses it in his art. You will find a nod to Annishinaabe traditional art within his pieces, yet he pursues his own style and thus feels an evolution of cultural art has formed.

He often finds that while he may begin with a concept in mind the art piece has a spirit of its own and he sees himself as a messenger helping to create and share it. James is originally from Eastern Canada where in his former life he was an RCMP member and then a School Teacher. He and his wife migrated from one coast to the other where we now live on Vancouver Island. You can check out his latest upcoming exhibits on www.easternwoodlandart.ca and stay current with him on Etsy and Instagram.

Truth Talk

The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation by James Corbiere (Waabi Makoohns)

Oct 29
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM EDT

Join this Truth Talk with James Corbiere as he shares his deeply personal and transformative journey in The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation: A Journey of Healing, Justice, and Creation by James Corbiere. Enduring the lasting impacts of being a childhood church trauma survivor, James’ pursuit of justice led him to channel his pain into action—creating The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation board game ("The Game"). Up against the immense challenges of being an Indigenous solopreneur in a world dominated by colonial corporations and institutions resistant to facing the Truth, including churches, James relentlessly knocked on doors, determined to bring his vision to life. His perseverance paid off when a visionary publisher, Medicine Wheel Publishing, saw the potential in The Game and helped James bring it to the world.

James will delve into the backstory of how The Game was conceived and how his passion for justice continues to drive its evolution. He will share how this educational tool promotes awareness and understanding, bringing the Truth of Canada's history and present to life through interactive, shared learning. His ultimate goal is to see The Game integrated into every school curriculum (ages 14+) across Canada, helping to ensure that future generations can walk the true path toward Truth and Reconciliation. James will also share some of the plans for a sequel, focusing on Reconciliation.

James also invites you to be part of this movement. You can help by spreading the word, requesting The Game for schools in your community (recommended for ages 14+), or purchasing a copy for yourself. Start a Game Club and host regular board game sessions at your local library (for 2-9 players) to cultivate deeper understanding and conversations about the Truth, moving forward together with Reconciliation, for the betterment of All.
