Why LOVE 2024?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CANADA?
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada was established as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, approved by all parties to the Agreement and its implementation began in September 2007, to address the immense harms of residential "schools." In 2015, the TRC released its Final Report, including 94 Calls to Action.
It has been over 155 years since Canada's genocidal origin, and the Government of Canada (GoC) claims to have completed 17 of 76 Calls to Action that it is directly or jointly responsible for. However, independent reviews show that the GoC has only completed 5 Calls to Action.
As part of the ongoing journey, LOVE 2024 is a platform to help further the (un)learning, connecting, transforming, and healing process for Truth and (re)Conciliation in a meaningful way across Turtle Island. Your involvement will help demonstrate a shared commitment to supporting First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples, cultivating genuine progress together.
The Truth
From the early 1830s to 1996, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were stolen from their families and communities to attend the “Indian Residential School System.” Although many of these 139 "schools" stopped operations by the mid-1970s, the last federally-run school, Gordon Indian Residential School in Punnichy, Saskatchewan, remained open until 1996.
The Honourable Murray Sinclair, former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, stated “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.”
LOVE 2024 is an (un)learning platform to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together, in a good way, to face the Truth and make (re)Conciliation a reality, for the betterment of All.
(re)Conciliation
In Chief Robert Joseph’s book, “Namwayut―We Are All One: A Pathway to Reconciliation,” he shares that (re)Conciliation is more than the 94 Calls to Action: “Reconciliation requires us to see ourselves and where we have set our goals, and why we have created those goals. On a personal level, reconciliation, for me, always comes back to love. We all need to be reconciled to love.”
LOVE 2024 is one of many ways to reconcile to love, activating a greater connection with ourselves and each other, with the goal of eradicating oppression to make a brighter future for the betterment of All.
Open-Minded & Open-Hearted
LOVE 2024 brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in a spirit of openness, with the goal of facing the Truth with honesty and compassion. This event is a dedicated time-space for (un)learning, where participants respectfully challenge preconceptions and connect with one another in a heart-centred way to ultimately expand individual and collective healing. LOVE 2024 recognizes that the journey toward (re)Conciliation is not just about looking back, but about moving forward together with a shared vision for a better future.
In the words of Chief Robert Joseph, a Hereditary Chief of the Gwawaenuk First Nation: “Reconciliation includes anyone with an open mind and an open heart who is willing to look into the future with a vision of peace.” This quote embodies the ethos of LOVE 2024, where all participants—whether Indigenous or non-Indigenous—are encouraged to approach the work of (re)Conciliation with humility, courage, and a commitment to peace.
LOVE 2024 is not just an event, but a call to action. It is a reminder that (re)Conciliation requires both individual and collective efforts to understand and dismantle the systems that have harmed Indigenous people, and to rebuild relationships based on mutual respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to the future. This gathering is an opportunity to forge new connections, strengthen existing ones, and build a movement grounded in the principles of justice, equity, and (re)Conciliation.
Whether you are coming for (un)learning, connecting, transforming, or healing, LOVE 2024 invites you to join this powerful journey toward (re)Conciliation, where the voices and experiences of Indigenous people are at the heart of the conversation, and non-Indigenous people are welcomed to walk alongside in decolonized solidarity and action. Together, we can look into the future with a vision of peace, guided by the teachings of Indigenous Worldviews, and inspired by the hope of what we can achieve together.
Time-space
Whether it's a Truth Talk, an Art Show, or Superstar X Magazine, LOVE 2024's Truth-Tellers and Truth-Seekers co-create a time-space that focuses on Indigenous experiences, knowledge, and perspectives, with the goal of cultivating understanding and (re)Conciliation. This time-space is a collaborative environment where Indigenous people lead the sharing of Truth, insights, and cultural wisdom, while non-Indigenous participants are invited to (un)learn and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Together, we challenge preconceptions, share lived experiences, and contribute to a collective journey toward Truth and (re)Conciliation. This co-created time-space honours Indigenous leadership and voices, while encouraging all participants to contribute to the betterment of All, laying the groundwork for a future rooted in respect, equity, and shared understanding.
